Well, I've been using Fedora 8 test 3 for the last two weeks as my principal OS in my laptop. So far, I can't say I'm impressed. However that's not bad, I mean that this release is filling all my expectations. It's pretty stable so far, my wireless (broadcom 4318) works pretty good --better than with Fedora Core 6 and Fedora 7, naturally--, my processor ticks almost never now and the new features (as the codec-buddy) run smoothly. I installed the livna devel repos in order to have my Nvidia working with proprietary drivers (I'm still hoping they'll someday open their code as AMD/ATI recently did) and started using compiz immediately. Now, the default configuration of Compiz isn't really impressive. But then again, I don't really like having so many effects on my screen, I'm usually happy with some transparency and perhaps other little features as sliding the desktop or such things. Nevertheless, I think they could provide us with some sort of configuration tool for compiz/compiz-fusion.
I tried installing Eclipse twice and that didn't work. It kept complaining about not finding some plugins, but I didn't really give too much of a battle to it and I let it be --mostly because I rather like downloading Eclipse directly from their website better than installing it from any distro repositories. Anyway, I finished using my downloaded version of Eclipse Europa just to discover that IcedTea runs a little bit slower than the official java 6 from Sun and uses a lot more of RAM and processor. Anyway, I think that's just a little bit natural, since IcedTea has just come out and it's still under heavy development I presume. Finally, I don't know whether that's a distribution problem or a problem from the guys @ OpenOffice.org, but I can't seem to change the default language for the spell check. In one distribution I get German by default, in another one I get English and I finish always enabling spell checking for all the languages installed. Anyway, as I said, I don't really know if that's a distro-specific problem or not. Oh, and the fonts in OpenOffice seem to be a little blurry, no matter what Font configuration I choose from the Gnome Panel. Overall, I found this release actually a very promising one. I can't wait to have the final version installed, I'm hoping it will be great. :D
